Day 7 - Palace of Versailles

You may notice from the date that we are now safely home...from a wonderful two weeks in Europe. But seeing as we had no internet access, I'll continue this day by day...

Day 7 was a travel day for the first part. We left Caen about 9 a.m. and headed to Versailles. The Palace is about 50,000 square feet...and it is majestic, to say the least. Louis XIV started this and it was a hunting lodge. It was surrounded by forests...and the king and family wanted to get away from Paris. When Louis XVI became king, he expanded it...and even wrote how to keep the gardens. Those records still are used today...to tell how many of which plants should be planted. Back in Louis XVI's days, the flowers were changed 15 times a year...today, only twice a year. The gates and so many other parts are decorated in 14 carat gold...it's amazing. The Hall of Mirrors was spectacular...and the king's and queen's bedrooms. The queen had one bedroom where she gave birth in public! 19 babies were born in public...to insure that they were indeed the queen's children. We saw the bedroom/bed where this took place.

We had time to explore this palace on our own. The gardens are unbelieveable...and I know many of us spent a lot of time exploring this. Lynne and I met up with a group who had found a small little outdoor cafe. We joined them and had some ice cream...and sat in the shade to cool off awhile.Sierra's first french crepe in France! You need to realize...this photo above is the back of the palace!

This is by far the most awe inspiring place I've ever seen. It is more than I would have fantasized if someone told me to think of the greatest house you could live in.It is beyond amazing. WOW! I want to see this someday for myself. PURE MATERIALISM at it's worst. Great Pictures as usual, Lenore
