Day 6: Learning about D-Day

Today was an emotional one for me...and for a few of our delegates. First, we slept about 3 hours and were off the ferry by 5:30 am...we were dragging, but here we are in France!

After our great French breakfast, we took off for Caen's War Museum: Le Memorial de Caen. This is an extremely well done museum that chronicles the events leading up to D-Day. We went through the museum at our own pace and then met together for a 35 minute movie a bit later. We had lunch on the lawn and it was so relaxing! Ok, so maybe a couple of us (aka ... Katie D and Nicole) didn't quite make it to the lawn before falling asleep!
We then met up with a guide who took us to Pointe du hoc - which is where the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliffs to disable the German guns in WWII when they were threatening Omaha and Utah beach... then we went to Omaha Beach...oh my! To be there and know what my father and so many others went through....it was overwhelming!Around this point of land is Omaha Beach...

Next was the cemetary where there are 9387 perfectly lined up crosses. We had a ceremony, laying a wreath for P2P. Sierra, McKenna, Kenny, and Anthony had the honors. Our national anthem was played and at the end, they played TAPS...
What else can you say....incredible!

Wow it sounds so wonderful everything you've done and seen so far! I'm sure Anthony was very honored to help with the wreath at Omaha. That was one of the places he was most excited to see, being the history buff that he is. Thank you so much for the blogs. I look forward to see all the exciting things you are doing! I've often wondered how it would feel to walk where a loved one had walked.Mom

Judy, Sierra's Dad, Godmother Lynda, and I all wait with anticipation between each blog. None of us have ever been to Europe and are traveling through you. Thank you so much. Also letting Sierra be part of D-Day meant a lot to her grandfather who lost his twin brother during that awful time. How do you have time to write a blog? Do you ever sleep? You keep so busy! These kids are so lucky! I can't wait to see pictures. Lenore, Sierra's Mom
